JANESVILLE Janesville Craig wanted to increase momentum, and Janesville Parker was eager to get back into the swing of the high school boys swim season Friday at the Craig pool.
The host Cougars turned up the rhythm in a 116-54 dual victory over the crosstown rival Vikings.
Craig improved to 3-2 in the Big Eight Conference, while Parker fell to 1-2.
“We’ve had three or four meets in a row where the team as a whole as has improved drastically,” Craig coach Brian Kitzman said. “The boys are very, very tired right now, but they are still swimming fast, and that’s exactly where we want them.’’
Parker coach Eric Rhodes knew his team was desperate for competition, coming off a layoff that extended from the Parker Relays on Dec. 13.
“We have not swam in a real meet for a month,” Rhodes said. “I knew the guys were kind of like wild animals in cages, waiting to bust out.’’
Rhodes was aware the Cougars would shake things up for the dormant Vikings.
“You put (Parker) up against a strong team like Craig that has nine seniors and a dozen kids that are club swimmers, they are superb team,” Rhodes said. “My guys, who have not swam in a while, I expected them to drop times, but not like they did tonight.’’
Rhodes was happy to report the Vikings trimmed a significant amount of times.
“There were not drops just one or two seconds,” Rhodes said. “Some were four, five, second drops.’’
The Cougars still won 10 of the 11 events.
Parker’s Nick Olin posted a 1:59.96 clocking to finish first in the 200 freestyle over Craig’s Taylor Pyne, who had a 2:00.91.
Craig’s Nick Hazekamp continued to bolster his senior season, winning the 100 freestyle in 50.58 and the 100 backstroke in 55.70.
Alex Loftus won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.21, and Matt Enloe won the 50 freestyle in 23.86. Sam Waddell took the 100 butterfly in 1:00.11, and Pyne came back to win the 500 freestyle in 5:33.12.
Craig swept the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. The Cougars are hoping to break the school records in all three events this season.
“We are getting closer and closer every meet,” Kitzman said. “We are feeling really good about all three.’’
Parker will participate in the Stoughton Invitational at 10 a.m. today.
