Evansville High took advantage of everybody else’s snow woes to gain ground Friday night in the Rock Valley boys basketball race.

The first-place Blue Devils had a tough test, but they pulled out a 43-38 victory over visiting Jefferson to gain a half-game lead over idle East Troy (4-0) with a 5-0 conference record.

Jesse Deininger’s three-point goal with 1:12 remaining gave Evansville a 39-31 lead, and the Blue Devils took it home from there as they improved to 7-2 for the season.

Jefferson (3-5, 2-4), which was seconds away from knocking off East Troy earlier this week, stayed close to Evansville until Deininger’s key shot. The Blue Devils led 20-15 at halftime and 31-25 after three quarters.

Trevor Probst had 20 points for the Eagles to take scoring honors. Andrew Keister led Evansville with 15, followed by Casey Moseley with 11 and Deininger with 10.
