It took Madison Memorial High School’s top-ranked boys basketball team three quarters to warm to the task, but the Spartans had the heat up full blast for the finish Tuesday night.

The result was a 30-15 fourth quarter that carried Memorial past previously unbeaten Beloit, 64-50, in a battle of the Big Eight Conference co-leaders.

The victory lifted Memorial’s five-time defending champions to 6-0 in the Big Eight and 7-0 overall. Beloit, which led 35-34 after three quarters, fell to 5-1 and 7-1.

Madison Memorial stars Vander Blue and Jeronne Maymon were held out of the starting lineup for breaking team rules. But after sitting out the first 2 ½ minutes, both were a major part of the Spartans’ final flurry on their home court.

Blue scored 10 of his 18 points in the final period, all in the Spartans’ 10-2 surge to start the quarter. The 6-4 junior guard, a University of Wisconsin recruit, hit a three-pointer to give Memorial the lead for good and added a defining dunk that put an exclamation point on the his team’s decisive surge.

Maymon, 6-7 senior and Marquette University recruit, had seven of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. Tre Creamer, another 6-4 junior guard, scored nine of 18 for the Spartans during that stretch.

K.J. Evans had 16 points to pace the sixth-ranked Purple Knights, who were neck-to-neck the Spartans until the final period.
