— Anne Morgan, Whitney Storbakken and Janesville Craig High School’s girls basketball team picked and rolled their way to a much-needed victory Tuesday night.

Morgan and Storbakken combined for 36 of Craig’s points as the Cougars (4-5, 3-4) grabbed their first win away from home—a 61-44 victory at Madison East.

“Anne and Whitney had a good inside and outside game,” Craig coach Mark Marsden. “It’s really good when you guards are hitting the post and post players are hitting your guards. Then you get your offense running.

“This was only the second time all we got over 50 points, and the difference was we got the ball into the post and scored inside.”

Morgan was the beneficiary, as the junior center made all four of her field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter and both of her free throws for 10 points to finish with a game-high 22. She hit eight of 10 from the field and helped Craig close out the Purgolders (3-5, 2-4), who had won three of their last four games, with a 21-14 fourth-quarter advantage.

Storbakken added 14 points, which included two three-pointers.

“The pick and rolls were really working,” Morgan said. “We also stepped up our defense, ran what we were supposed to, and got it done.”

The Cougars got it done by making six of their eight fourth-quarter field-goal attempts and nine of 17 free throws to stay in front.

East cut the Craig lead to 40-32 on Nyakour Deang’s two free throws, but struggled the rest of the way from the foul line, making just eight of 17 fourth-quarter free throws.

Morgan hit back-to-back baskets to start an 8-0 run to end the threat, and Amanda Hamilton made five of seven fourth-quarter free throws to close out the victory.

Makailah Dyer led East with 18 points, despite being hounded by Hailey Smith most of the night.

“We are starting to play pretty well,” Marsden said. “The kids did a great job.”
