— The mother of the first baby born at Mercy Hospital in 2009 is looking for a better year than last year.

Like everyone else, Marie Wallace lived through epic snowstorms, floods and devastating economic news last year. She also was injured in a rollover accident on a slippery road on Jan. 1, 2008.

“It could have been much worse, but apparently I still had a job to do,” she said from her hospital bed. “So if that’s anything, 2009 is going to be a much better year.”

One year after being hospitalized from the accident, Wallace is back in a hospital bed, looking into the eyes of her sixth child.

Lucia “Lucy” Nichole Wallace was born at 10:29 p.m. Thursday. That’s late in the day for the first birth of a new year.

“Everybody else decided to go for the tax deduction,” Marie joked.

The birth was without incident, and Lucy is healthy and doing well, her mother reported.

This brings the brood of Chris and Marie Wallace of Janesville to six—two boys and four girls.

One good omen for a better year: Lucy was born on the date that could be expressed as 1-1-’9.

“She’s the opposite of 9-1-1, so that should mean she’s going to be all smooth sailing,” Marie said with the gentle humor of a mother who knows that no child sails perfectly through life.

I've never really understood why this has to be news every year. A "Leap Year" baby I can understand. Judging by the five siblings listed this couple has been trying to nail this one for the past 13 years. So for that, congrats on the new little whippersnapper.

Uhh, congratulations, I guess. Did the baby win any prizes or anything? How about a $25 savings bond from the Gazette? That's always a good prize for things like this.
