WCLO's Steve Benton talks to a veterinarian about cold weather pet care.

— As the weather turns cold, don't forget about your pets, especially if they're going to be outside.

Dr. Mike Hotchkiss, with Janesville Veterinary Clinic, says dog houses don't work very well when temperatures drop below zero. He says it's also important to give pets high quality food.

Hotchkiss says even though most animals have fur, they may not have enough of it to be outside very long. He says some animals are bred for the cold while others aren't.

A tip for owners of short hair pets is to have them wear a coat or sweater. He says you can put booties on your pet's too, especially if you think they'll be walking in chemicals or salt used to melt ice.

It makes my heart sick to see pets kept outside in the winter, even with a dog house. People, please, please, please, if you have an animal and the temperatures are very low, do the responsible thing and at very least bring the dog into a sheltered garage or shed or make other arrangements for the dog while it's really cold out.
