Police focusing on dangerous drivers

— Janesville police will step up patrols for speeders and reckless drivers Saturday.

Officers will be running radar in areas that have a high number of complaints of unsafe drivers and a high number of speed-related crashes, according to a police department news release.

The department received a $20,000 state grant in November to pay for overtime and equipment to crack down on dangerous drivers, according to the news release.

The department will have additional officers on patrol at various times throughout the year.

No problem Gmaof3.
I know it must seem that police never stop people at that location if every time you go through there you don't see someone pulled over. It's an easy assumption to make.
Be careful and safe out there!

PigBrain, thank you for the info. I've never seen anyone pulled over for idiotic stunts at this intersection, but its great to know, they ARE getting pulled over. I've been driving for 33 years and just this past 18 months or so, I've noticed so much more rude selfish driving. People tail gate on I90 (I swear they're catching a buzz off my fumes!) if I had to suddenly brake, I'd be rear ended.. and actually obeying traffic lights is a joke!

If you DON'T drive defensively, you WILL be involved in an accident! I live in Milton and we listen to our scanner on weekends... the intersection at Cty N and Hwy 26 is a death trap. But people still insist on driving like jerks.

I fear for my daughters... One drives just from Janesville to Milton, but Cty Y has gotten treacherous... and my other daughter drives to Madison everyday and I worry about other people running her off the road!

Gma, I promise you that many citations are issued for incidents at that particular intersection. In an eight hour shift, it's very, very safe to say that the officers who patrol the two sectors of the city that are divided by Humes Road are at that intersection dozens of times. Many violations are cited. Many are not because the officer isn't there at that time.
It's the cat-and-mouse game that law enforcement officers play every day.
The comment about waiting and looking at a red light, instead of just looking at your light turning green and assuming that the coast is clear...that is golden advice. That's what separates a good driver from an accident victim.

Nowadays... I EXPECT to see some moron run a light. I wait a few seconds before crossing an intersection, I've watched too many jerks breezing through on red lights.

A perfect example are the turn lanes at Hwy 14 and Hwy 26. Even after the turn lane arrow goes to red, you'll see another 4 or 5 cars continue on through. I've blown my horn at these jerks crossing in front of me with my green light, and they flip ME off! The cop shop is just a few miles from this intersection, but I have yet to see anyone get stopped for blowing these lights!

Where were the cops saturday around 1pm near state and center? Seen 2 suv heading north on center just absolutely BLOW the red light. Didnt turn red when they were in the intersection, it was red for them for at least 2-3 sec (light for state st just turned green and these two Einsteins blew through it. The white Lexus suv's driver was too busy with her phone apparently to notice a red light. Couldnt say for the other darker colored one since they were close to side by side going about 40.

I would like to know why people, in this area of Wisconsin, TAILGATE? I usually drive 5 miles over the speed limit, but there's always some creep tailgating. This is harrassment and should be ticketed. This type of RUDNESS constitutes a redneck and sheeer stupidity.

This is how it works:
The PD gets grant money from a variety of resources who designate where the money should be spent.
The PD needs additional money to pay for the extra speed enforcement because the officer on traffic duty is an extra car that day. The city budget really is that tight.
It may appear to some that officers only perform traffic enforcement. But the reality is they are understaffed and run from call to call, with very little free time to apply to traffic detail. Which is why additional resources are needed to perform the speed enforcement that the public has asked for.
One person commented about a particular intersection in the city that has a high number of drivers running the red lights. That is exactly the kind of input from the community the department wishes to receive. One call to the department places that intersection on the list of areas the officer on grant money is instructed to patrol. I'm sure the officers know that particular intersection is a crash magnet, but the call from the public is a guarantee to get patrol of that area increased. Public service and safety really are important to the members of the department.

Copland I have never ever seen a cop run towards gun fire. They call for back up and wait. Somebody is watching too many movies. I would predict that 90% of Janesville cops never draw their firearm in a year, maybe even in 10 years. If Wisconsin had a concealed carry the residents would act on site and not need to wait for a cop. It's too little, too late, when an officer arrives in most situations.
Until the bad apples are gone I'm standing firm on accountability, tax cuts and loss of jobs.

How about using the money for the bike tunnel to help pay overtime to bust people who violate cross walk laws? $600,000+ pays for a lot of police overtime!

rep_of_1 - my record is absolutely clean. As far as there being bad apples, I agree 100%. However all her posts reflect NOTHING but negativity. Unfortunately this is the attitude law enforcement encounters all the time. First people complain that more law enforcement isn't needed and we're spending too much on salaries, benefits, equip, etc...but they're the first ones b#tching that the cops didn't get there fast enough when they called. Can't have it both ways. Cops aren't paid for what they do...they're paid for what they're willing to do. Next time you see one you should them him or her for being willing to run toward the gunfire when everyone else is running away.

Be sure to keep an eye what $20,000 dollars is getting us today as noted in print.
How many various times of the year should we expect to see new equipment and over time as well? Why is overtime even considered? Last I knew the police are required to run three shifts 24/7. What are police not doing on their shift to need over time? Is there a staffing issue or a lack of responsibility during shifts worked? Looking at what can be accomplished and is accomplished is done in an other business. Why should the police department get ran any different? Who is considered responsible for the lack of pro action to have prevented this need in the first place?

Here's a hint. Read the articles closer. You will see that the grant is for a specific area of enforcement. Also Mr Angus please help this community save face and inactivate all these blogs. In the beginning they were informative. But as time has gone on they have gone the other way.

copland first post your record then throw stones in your glass house. Cops and law have little to do with each other, very little in this day and age. biggirls opinion just like mine is there are bad apples in the law enforcement department and money is spent foolishly. It is too big to police it's self. Reality is the money has no public accountability other than what the gazette prints. Witting tickets takes further equipment? What some new paper and pens...get real.

How do you know the child was only 1? What IF the parent was watching the car from the doorway while their food was getting boxed up? This has nothing to do with reckless driving..

biggirl- I realize Hannah's post wasn't relevant to the story, but if someone needed medicine for a child and had no one to watch her, than they should take their child with them. Not leave them alone. That is never the right option.

Hannah- I just have to say that tjncj is right in a way. You must be specific in your original posting if you are going to comment on a situation that may be relevant, but not directly related to the article. Yes, people should be more cognizant about leaving their children in their cars, but the article is related to "dangerous drivers" ie.. unsafe driving and speed related crashes. While leaving a child unattended is not the best choice to make, it has nothing to do with dangerous DRIVING.
Suggesting you be more specific is not meant to be offensive in any way. I just want to make sure that when those of us who do blog periodically are not lost. I would also suggest writing your post in Word so your grammer and spelling are a litte easier on the eyes. Again... just a suggestion.

Hannah: How nice it must feel to be so sanctimonious. How about if the woman needed to get medicine for the child and had no one to watch her? In our society, we give all this money to police and enforcement, but we give nothing to help people out. What if we had daycare for the working poor? All this money that goes to these pet enforcement project could go to such things, but I guess sanctimonious people wouldn't feel so good because they wouldn't have the cudgel of the police beating those who they take to be morally inferior.

Actually departments do need the grants to help pay for the overtime. Due to tax levies most are so understaffed that the overtime budget for this coming year will be used up around July/August. Gone are the days where you have shift changovers every eight hours, now it is a partial shift change every four hours because so many are working mandatory twelve hours shifts.
