Delavan-Darien girls lose in regional

— Delavan-Darien beat Union Grove by one game in the race for the Southern Lakes girls basketball title.

But the Broncos got the last laugh in Saturday’s WIAA Division 2 regional title game, holding off the Comets, 44-40, to earn a berth in the Janesville Craig sectional. Union Grove (16-7) will play Madison Edgewood in next Friday night’s sectional semifinal at Kettle Moraine.

Delavan-Darien (18-4) couldn’t stop Union Grove’s Kaitlyn Wilks, who scored a game-high 18 points. Wilks had nine first-quarter points. She hit all six of her first-quarter free throws. Hannah Grindle had nine points for Union Grove, which led 21-15 at the half.

Alana Cesarz led the Comets with 14 points. Mallory Epping had 10 and Courtney Flood added eight.

n Monroe 49, McFarland 37—The defending Division 2 champion Cheesemakers made 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter in pulling away for the Verona Regional final victory.

Monroe (21-2) will play Richland Center in a Janesville Craig Sectional semifinal game Friday night at Waunakee.

Jamie Armstrong scored 22 points to lead Monroe, while Julia Thorson paced the Spartans (17-6) with 16.

n Edgewood 59, Columbus 50—The Crusaders outscored top-ranked Columbus 25-7 in the fourth quarter in pulling off the Division 2 regional final upset.

Kenzie Kolb scored 31 points for Edgewood (20-3), including seven three-point baskets.

Edgewood will play Union Grove on Friday night at Kettle Moraine in Janesville Craig Sectional semifinal game.
