— Sub-Zero Freezer/Wolf Appliance says it will lay off up to 350 workers on or after May 1 due to slow sales.

Many of the company's employees live in Rock County.

The company builds high-end refrigerators, freezers and cooking appliances. Its Thursday announcement follows the layoff of 79 workers in January at the Wolf Appliance division in Madison. It also has operations in Fitchburg and Phoenix.

Vice president of human resources Chuck Verri says the recession and a slowdown in home construction and remodeling are to blame. He says much of the company's business comes from kitchen remodeling.

Madison Local 565 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union represents many of the company's workers. Business agent Dave Goodspeed says the news was a blow because Sub-Zero/Wolf provides good-paying jobs.

Sorry about the SSI workers but I'm glad the others are going. The INS could have a field day there!
