— Janesville Parker High School’s boys basketball team got the early jump on Middleton here Thursday night, but the Cardinals had the last word.

In fact, they answered quickly after the Vikings grabbed a 5-0 lead, and the result was a 74-51 victory for Middleton in a Big Eight Conference season finale.

With a sweep of the season series, which included a 51-47 victory last month at Parker, the Cardinals (8-12) jumped a notch in the Big Eight standings to finish in a sixth-place tie with Madison La Follette at 7-11. Parker wound up 1-17 in the conference and 1-19 overall, with its only victory over Madison West.

Tyler Teubert made three of four free throws, and 6-4 sophomore Creed Knutson scored from under the basket to give Parker its 5-0 lead over Middleton. Michael Owen then got the Cardinals rolling with a pair of free throws, and Shane Adler, Matt Everson and Jay Nunnery followed with three straight three-point goals, suddenly giving Middleton an 11-5 lead it never relinquished.

The Cardinals led 19-14 after the first quarter and 33-24 at halftime, then gained some breathing room with a 19-11 advantage in the third period.

Ian Joyce, a 6-6 sophomore, came off the Middleton bench to score eight of his 12 points in the first half. Owen, a 6-6 junior, had 11 of his 13 in the second half as the Cardinals’ twin towers had one of their best showings of the season.

Everson, the Cardinals’ season leader, topped his 13.4 conference average with 23 points. Teubert, a 6-2 junior, paced Parker with 15 points, and 6-4 senior Jason Knutson had 11 for the Vikings.

Parker hits the WIAA tournament trail Tuesday with a Division 1 regional semifinal game at Verona.

All of those seniors he cut would have been more of a cancer to the team than anything. In fact he even had to kick a senior off the team half way through the season.

Wasn't he on Suter's staff before going to Parker? You don't think that Suter and Masterson maybe had an agreement that Masterson get his feet wet coaching varsity somewhere else so he would be "ready" for the Craig job when it opened up?

Isn't he going to bolt over to Craig now that Suter is leaving?

I have been following Parker basketball for years and watching this coach. I know he cares deeply for these young men and their sucess. I have concluded that he has has rules and expectations that these kids must follow. I let my own instincts make my decisions. I am sorry that some seniors were released from the team. I do think that the coach cares, I can see it. Most parents seem very pleased. Good luck Parker

To all whom this may concern Ryan Masterson lied directly to my son and I prior to this season telling us that He, Coach Masterson was dedicated to the seniors entering this season. He cut the best three senior boys breaking each one of there hearts prior to the start of the season. To play this type of politics on a team that ended up 1-23 is insane. Play this type of politics on a 23-1 team better yet never play this type of politics. Seniors who were dedicated and won their positions 3 straight years did not deserve this. Mr Masterson you took their senior season from them and for that you will never get my support, you should truly be ashamed of your actions. You were not even man enough to tell them face to face.
