In the biggest Big Eight Conference boys basketball game of the season, a freshman proved to be the difference maker.

Madison Memorial’s Junior Lomomba scored 18 points to lead the second-ranked Spartans to a 56-45 win over fifth-ranked Madison East.

With the victory, Memorial (19-1, 17-1) clinched its sixth straight undisputed conference title and snapped East’s 16-game win streak, leaving the Purgolders at 17-3 and 15-3.

The Purgolders had dealt the Spartans their only loss of the season and had a chance to tie for the Big Eight title, but they couldn’t contain the 6-foot-4 Lomomba.

East tied the game midway through the third quarter, but the Spartans went on a 6-0 run to forge ahead and were never threatened after that.

Marquette University recruit Jeronne Maymon added 13 points for the Spartans, while junior Marquis Mason of East led all scorers with 19.
