— This is why coach Pat Miller and his UW-Whitewater men’s basketball team wanted a first-round bye in the WIAC tournament.

The Warhawks built a 21-point lead by halftime, but then had to sweat out a UW-River Falls second-half rally to beat the visiting Falcons, 86-81, in a quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

The Warhawks (22-4) play at second-seeded UW-Platteville in a semifinal game Thursday night. Whitewater lost at Platteville, 86-78, in the regular season, but beat the Pioneers at home.

The Falcons did not allow the Warhawks that luxury. They cut the lead to nine with 14:44 left, then went on an 8-0 run to get within two points, 65-63, with 7:07 left.

Whitewater stepped on the gas with seven straight points and still led, 82-72, with 1:18 left.

The Falcons (11-15) had one last charge. Danny Johnson’s three-point basket got the Falcons to within 84-81 with 14 seconds left.
