Parkview wins, Clinton falls in Divison 3 regional play

A good halftime talk worked wonders for Orfordville Parkview High School’s girls basketball team Tuesday night.

The Vikings pulled away from a 30-22 halftime lead to romp past visiting New Glarus, 67-40, in a WIAA Division 3 regional opener.

Parkview (18-3), the Rock Valley South runner-up, hosts Mineral Point (16-5) in a regional semifinal Thursday. The winner takes on top-ranked Cuba City (21-0) or Belleville (14-7) in a Saturday regional final at Monroe that leads to the Reedsburg Sectional.

Junior forward April Wellnitz led the balanced Parkview attack with 12 points. Stephanie Aasen added 11 points, and Melissa Harnack added 10 for the Vikings. Seven Vikings scored in a 22-point third quarter.

Tanya Gruter led New Glarus (4-17) with 18 points.

n Mineral Point 51, Clinton 44—Claire Poad scored 22 points, had 10 rebounds and eight steals to lead Mineral Point (16-5) past visiting Clinton (12-9) in a Division 3 regional opener.

The senior forward had 14 of her 22 points in the second half as Mineral Point advanced to play at Orfordville Parkview on Thursday. Taylor Einerson added 11 points for the Pointers.

Senior guard Liz Althoff, the Rock Valley scoring champion, hit 15 free throws en route to a 25-point night for the Cougars.

n Cuba City 90, Turner 16—Seven Cubans scored in double figures as top-ranked Cuba City (21-0) blasted the Trojans (1-18) for its 96th victory in its last 97 games.

Amanda Kaiser and Grace Stotmeister scored a game-high 13 points apiece to lead the Cubans. Danielle Matuszak and Megan Pickel added 12 points apiece. Stephanie Wagner and Megan Moor added 11 points each and Katie Hibly had 10.

Turner scored just three second-half points.

Cuba City advances to Thursday’s regional semifinal game at home against Belleville (14-7).

n Luther Prep 66, Palmyra-Eagle 27—Lydia Free scored a game-high 19 points as Watertown Luther Prep (9-12) used a 36-8 second-half run to pull away from Palmyra-Eagle in Division 3 regional opener.

Hannah Rothe added 12 points and Maddy Scott had 11 for the Phoenix, who play at Deerfield in Thursday night’s regional semifinal. That’s pairs into the West Bend Sectional.

Liz Madecky led Palmyra-Eagle with (4-17) with 11 points.
