Beloit Memorial and Elkhorn lead boys basketball seeding

Beloit Memorial and Elkhorn are the teams to beat in the Janesville Craig Sectional for high school boys basketball.

That’s what the coaches have said in making the Purple Knights (14-5) and Elks (16-2) the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, for WIAA Division 1 postseason play that starts with the regional semifinals on Tuesday, March 3.

Verona (12-7) is the sectional’s No. 3 seed, followed by No. 4 Kenosha Tremper (12-6) and No. 5 Craig (9-10).

Craig is in the upper bracket with Beloit, which receives a first-round bye. The Cougars open at home against No. 12 Westosha Central and would play Tremper or No. 13 Wilmot (4-15) in the Saturday, March 7, regional finals.

Beloit’s first game is at home in the regional finals against the winner between No. 9 Stoughton (9-10) at No. 8 Lake Geneva Badger (9-9), the defending sectional champion.

Janesville Parker (1-18) is the No. 14 seed and plays at Verona in the Tuesday, March 3, regional semifinals as part of the sectional’s lower bracket. That winner draws No. 11 Milton (7-11) or No. 6 Kenosha Bradford (10-10), who meet a regional opener at Kenosha.

Elkhorn gets a first-round bye in the lower bracket and hosts No. 7 Burlington (10-9) or No. 10 Oregon (7-11) in the regional finals.

If the top seeds advance to the sectional, all of which will be played at Craig, it would be Beloit against Tremper in the Friday, March 13, semifinal opener, followed by Elkhorn against Verona. Beloit would play Elkhorn in the Saturday, March 14, championship game to determine a qualifier for the March 19-21 state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
