MADISON Dalton Anderson had two goals in the WIAA Division 2 state meet at the UW Natatorium: To become Elkhorn High’s first boys state swim champion, and to post the Elks’ first-ever All-America time.
Done and done.
In an exhilarating finish to the 100-yard butterfly here Friday night that left him pumping his fists and splashing water, Anderson raced out to a sizable lead and held off hard-charging Stephen Meyer of Shorewood and Brandon O’Donnell of McFarland in the lanes next to him to touch the wall in 50.69 seconds for a state title.
“I just saw them both coming and said, ‘I’m not losing,’” said Anderson, who entered the race as the top seed and finished the season unbeaten in the 100 butterfly. “No matter what, I couldn’t lose that race. I’ve won it all year and wanted to stay undefeated in it.”
And he was certainly aware of the history attached to becoming the Elks’ first state champ in boys swimming.
“Swimming in our school isn’t really a big thing. It’s our football program,” Anderson said. “So now, to have that as our title up there for swimming is really good for us.”
In addition, Anderson’s time was good enough to best the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association’s standard for All-America status in the 100 butterfly.
“It was a great end to his senior year, to his (high school) career,” said Elkhorn coach Jamie Richardson, who added that she’s “90 percent sure” that Anderson will swim at UW-Green Bay next season.
Delavan-Darien junior Alex Riegert, meanwhile, joined Anderson as a state champion by winning the 100 breaststroke in 57.93 seconds. Riegert and senior teammate Nate Johnson—who earlier placed third for the second straight year in the 200 individual medley—were seeded 1-2 in the event and basically stayed that way the whole race, with Johnson placing second in 59.35.
“It was great racing my teammate,” said Riegert, who also placed fifth in the 100 freestyle. “We’ve been together for years. Going into it, no matter what happened, we were excited. It was our last race against each other.
“Boy, that was a great time.”
Racing with each other—and not against each other—in the meet’s first event, Johnson swam the lead and Riegert the anchor as the Comets placed second in the 200 medley relay. The relay team also included senior Tanner Schmaling and junior Kevin Schneider.
Milton captured no state titles but had a solid all-around performance, including three top-eight relay finishes.
Junior Jeff Maxwell served as the Red Hawks’ ironman, swimming the 200 medley relay, the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay.
Maxwell exhibited an unselfish attitude by competing in the 200 medley relay immediately before the 200 freestyle, where he was seeded first. The fatigue showed in the 200 freestyle, as Maxwell started fast before fading and finishing fourth.
But Milton coach Tom Lieder had high praise for Maxwell’s attitude.
“He’s a really big team player,” Lieder said. “He wanted to do that. If he hadn’t been in that (200 medley) relay, those boys would not have won that medal.”
Maxwell came within a hair of repeating as 500 freestyle champion, touching the wall in 4:39.39, just shy of McFarland’s Graham Thoresen (4:39.16), for second place.
In the team standings, Delavan-Darien finished seventh out of 31 teams with 122 points. Milton was eighth with 121, and Elkhorn took 12th with 82. McFarland dusted the field for the team title with 332 points.
