— Nick Hazekamp capped off a productive high school swim career with a trip to the medal stand at WIAA Division 1 state meet here Saturday at the UW Natatorium.

The Janesville Craig senior tied for fourth in the 100-yard backstroke to highlight the day for Janesville swimmers.

Madison Memorial won its sixth team title, sparked by a record-setting day from Michael Drives. The senior swam to victory in the 200 freestyle with a state-record time of 1:38:02.

Memorial finished with 200.5 points, while the co-op team of Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights was second with 182.5. Craig had 29.5 points, and the co-op team of Lake Geneva Badger/Walworth Big Foot finished with 16.

Hazekamp swam a school-record time of 52.20 in the 100 backstroke in tying Memorial’s Kyle Challis for fourth. Byron Butler of New Berlin West won the event in 50.05. Hazekamp also took five seconds off his previous-best time in the 200 freestyle and finished ninth with a time of 1:45.4.

Craig’ 200 medley relay team of Hazekamp, Alex Loftus, Sam Waddell and Matt Enloe was 14th with a school-record time of 1:40.7, while the 200 freestyle relay team of Nicholas Strub, Sean Davis, Tyler Meinders and Enloe was 17th. The Cougars’ 400 freestyle relay team of Strub, Meinders, Enloe and Hazekamp was 18th in 3:19.67.

Janesville Parker senior Marcus Genrich finished 20th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.04

Badger’s/Big Foot’s Nathan Kidder was ninth in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 freestyle.

Madison Memorial’s Michael Drives and Hartland Arrowhead’s Ryan Hansen wowed the crowd with a record-setting duel in the distance events, but Drives was the last swimmer in the pool Saturday as he celebrated a WIAA Division 1 state boys swimming and diving championship with his Spartans teammates.

It was one of the most competitive battles for the team titles in recent memory.

Memorial’s winning total, meanwhile, was the lowest since 1982 when Madison West won the single-division meet with 179 points.
