Big day for East Troy
East Troy High School will be well represented at the WIAA Division 2 state individual wrestling tournament.
Five Trojans advanced to next weekend’s state tournament at the Kohl Center, including four making a return trip. Seniors Chesten Kesselhon (171) and David Edwards (140) won Milwaukee Lutheran Sectional titles to earn a second straight trip to state, while junior Jake Zess (125) finished second and Jacob Stollenwerk (189) made it back after finishing second and third, respectively. East Troy’s Matthew Reitman was third at 285 and also advanced to state.
Clinton High qualified three wrestlers for the Division 2 state meet from Saturday’s Richland Center Sectional. Daniel and Bryan Banh qualified at 112 and 125, respectively, after finishing third. The Cougars’ Brad Hesebeck finished second at 130 and also advanced.
Jefferson’s Ryan Bartelt won the 140-pound title at Richland Center to qualify, while teammate Tim Pendleton earned a berth after finishing third at 103 pounds.
At the Division 1 Waukesha West Sectional, Elkhorn’s Ryan Slack and Richard Kessler both suffered their first losses of the season but advanced to the state meet. Kessler, a senior who will wrestle at Stanford, is now 36-1 on the season after losing to Muskego’ freshman Roland Dunlap, 7-5 in overtime, in the 171-pound title bout.
Slack saw his record fall to 41-1 after losing 10-8 in overtime to Tyler Quartullo of Muskego in the 119-pound title match.
Fort Atkinson’s Ryan Smith finished second at 145 pounds at the Waukesha West Sectional to earn a state berth.
