— Joe Kennedy picked the right option, and Kyle Goike made it look easy.

Goike collected Kennedy’s crosscourt in-bound pass with 4.6 seconds left, ducked under a defender and made his lay-up at the buzzer to give Janesville Craig a 43-41 victory over Madison West in Big Eight boys basketball here Thursday night.

The final two points gave Goike a total of 19, which included five three-pointers to get Cougars back to .500 at 8-8 in the conference and 9-9 overall.

“We had run that play earlier, so the defense knew what was coming,” Goike said. “I read my defender and back-flared off him and was wide open.

“I was looking for the pump fake, because they knew I was going to shoot a jump shot, but I got a step on him and took him to the hole.”

While holding a 41-39 lead, Craig tried to run off the final 1:40 until A.J. Fredericks was fouled and sent to the free throw line with 14.2 seconds left. He missed the front end of the bonus and fouled Colin Jarvis on the rebound. The West senior made both free throws to tie the game.

After reaching half-court, Craig called timeout to set up the final play.

“We’ve run that play time and time again in practice,” Craig coach Bob Suter said. “The thing has got so many options, depending upon if you need one, two or three points.

“Joe Kennedy made a perfect read and found Kyle over the top. Kyle had enough presence of mind to take the ball to the basket, and we go home the winner. All’s well that ends well.”

Not for West, which fell to 3-14 in the Big Eight and 4-15 overall after the last-second loss.

“We didn’t want to foul them or give up a lay-up,” West coach Boyce Hodge said. “Kyle was able to catch it and sweep through to the basket.

“That should have never happened. It was a cross-court pass, and our player just lost vision of the ball.”

The Regents used an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 37-33 lead. After a Craig timeout, Fredericks put back a rebound, and Goike followed with a three-pointer to put the Cougars on top.

Antonio Golden, who led West with 12 points, despite missing most of the third quarter with stomach flu, countered with a lay-up to give West a 39-38 lead. Goike then answered with a three-pointer for Craig’s 41-39 lead, and the Cougars set up the final sequence after a West turnover on the next possession with 1:40 remaining.

“When we had five minutes to play and we took a timeout, I challenged our guys,” Suter said. “I said, ‘We haven’t played well the whole ballgame, but you’ve got five minutes to play, fly around and get the job done. If you want it, go get it.’

“Well, they did.”
