UW-Oshkosh stuns UW-Whitewater men

— UW-Oshkosh stunned visiting UW-Whitewater, 65-64, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball thriller here Wednesday night.

The Titans’ D.J. Marsh made a layup with eight seconds remaining to upset the No. 3-ranked Warhawks. Chris Vines missed a layup that would have given Whitewater the victory as time expired.


Whitewater (20-4, 12-3) remained in a second-place tie with UW-Platteville (20-4, 12-3), which ost 65-60 to UW-Eau Claire. Both have one game remaining.


UW-Stevens Point (21-3, 14-1), which hosts Platteville at Saturday, clinched the championship by beating UW-La Crosse, 78-52.


Oshkosh (14-10, 8-7) broke out to a 51-41 lead in the second half before Whitewater rallied to take a 56-53 lead with 6:15 remaining.


The Titans bounced back to take a 58-56 lead, but Whitewater tied it at 58-58 with 3:23 remaining. Matt Miller’s three-pointer gave the Titans a 61-58 lead at 2:56.


Whitewater pulled within 61-60 on Vines’ layup at 2:19, but Dane Secker-Anderson put Oshkosh up 63-60 with a basket at 1:54. Kori Vernon got Whitewater within 63-62 with 1:35 remaining, and Myles McKay gave Whitewater its last lead, 64-63, on a layup with 29 seconds left.


Matt Goodwin led Whitewater with 15 points. Vernon finished with 14, Dustin Mitchell added 12, and McKay had 11.


The Titans made 8 of 15 three-point attempts to 3 of 14 for Whitewater.


Whitewater finishes the WIAC regular season Saturday at UW-River Falls.
