Waterford High made sure Elkhorn wouldn’t celebrate an undisputed Southern Lakes Conference boys basketball title on its floor Tuesday night.

The Wolverines used a 16-10 advantage over the Elks in the final quarter to register a 55-52 upset of the state’s sixth-ranked Division 1 team.

While the second-place Wolverines (13-5) dropped Elkhorn to 10-1 in the conference and 16-2 overall, they kept their hopes for a co-championship alive by improving to 8-2 in the conference.

Elkhorn, which is assured of a title tie, still can clinch the outright championship on its own by winning at home against Wilmot in a Feb. 27 regular-season finale.

Beau Steffens scored 17 points and had four rebounds to lead Waterford, but it was Joe Sturino who scored seven of his team’s 16 points in the fourth quarter. Sturino finished with 10.

Eric Bryson and Max Findreng each had 14 points for Elkhorn, while Ross Olson added 10.
