Jail death consistent with hanging

JANESVILLE — The death of a Rock County Jail inmate found dead in his cell is consistent with a hanging, according to the Rock County Coroner’s Office.

Kenneth Cardero Smith, 20, Beloit, was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell at 11:34 p.m. Monday, according to the coroner’s office.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday afternoon at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison.

Toxicology results are pending.

Smith had been held in jail on $750 cash bond since Jan. 28 on a charge of second-degree reckless injury.
