Eric Nieman and Jesse Deininger was a potent combination for Evansville High boys basketball team Tuesday night.


Nieman scored 12 points and Deininger added 11 in the first half, and the Blue Devils went on to earn a critical 57-52 victory over visiting McFarland in Rock Valley North action.


The Blue Devils (13-5, 11-3) remained two games behind North leader East Troy (13-4, 13-1).


Deininger and Nieman each finished with 16 points, while Andrew Keister added 14 for Evansville. After his big first half, Deininger added five points in the final quarter when the Blue Devils protected a small lead.


Keister made four of five free throws in the fourth quarter.


Lucas Schmitz had 16, and Aaron Dixon added 13 for McFarland.

n East Troy 79, Jefferson 47—East Troy scored early and often and protected its two-game Rock Valley North lead by rolling over Jefferson.


The Trojans (13-4, 13-1) outscored the Eagles 52-27 in the first half and never were threatened, unlike their 56-53 victory in the closing seconds at Jefferson last month.


Scott Beckwith led East Troy with 23 points. Brett Bauman scored 16, Mitch Windle had 14, and Cody Condon added 10 points for the Trojans.


Trevor Probst paced Jefferson (7-10, 6-8) with 14 points, and teammate Ramsey Tabor had 10.

n Big Foot 72, Brodhead 51—The Chiefs) got a team-high 16 points from Nathan Nagel and made nine three-pointers goal to upset Brodhead’s Rock Valley South leaders.


The loss left Cardinals (11-7, 8-6) only a half-game ahead of Turner (10-9, 8-7) who they play Friday night at Beloit.


Big Foot (9-8, 6-7) also got 15 points from Alec McGreevy and 13 from Steve Dowden as the Chiefs outscored the Cardinals in every quarter.


Jake Cole led Brodhead with 14 points. J.J. Panoske added 13 and Ryan Miller had 12.

n Turner 67, Palmyra-Eagle 29—Beloit Turner held Palmyra-Eagle to seven second-half points and earned a shot at the Rock Valley South title.


The second-place Trojans (10-9, 8-7) pulled within half-game of Brodhead (11-7, 8-6) and host the Cardinals on Friday night. A victory would assure Turner of at least a title tie.


After leading 31-22 at halftime, Turner dropped a 36-7 blitz on Palmyra-Eagle (2-18, 0-14) the rest of the way.


Jason Jones led Turner (8-7) with 17 points. Jordan Conway scored 13 points for the Trojans and teammate Mike Jacobs added 11.

Austin DeLong scored 16 points, and Justin Gunderson added 15 to lead Clinton (4-14, 2-12).
