Clinton, Parkview fall short in sectional wrestling

Clinton High School’s bid for a WIAA Division 2 state team wrestling tournament berth was dashed with a 62-12 loss to top-ranked Lodi in a sectional final Tuesday night at Lodi.


The defending Division 2 state team champs registered nine pins out of 11 victories. Brandon Wixom (119), Bryan Banh (125) and Brad Hesebeck (130) posted victories for Clinton.


Clinton defeated River Valley, 38-31, in the semifinals, and Lodi advanced with a 36-15 win over Iowa-Grant/Highland.


Dan Banh (112), Wixom (112), Brian Bahn (125), Salvador Carranza (135), Dane Brandl (140), Ken Wirkuty (160), Andrew Callas (189) and Tyler Russell (285) posted victories to highlight Clinton’s semifinal win.

Orfordville Parkview’s Cinderella ride ended with a 54-25 semifinal loss to host Laconia in the Division 3 sectional team competition.


The Vikings’ Cody Trezek (125), Jesse Peterson (135), Ben Neal (145), Jeremy Graham (152) and Ben Soyck (189) posted victories. Parkview had to forfeit five bouts.


“We won five bouts, but we just couldn’t fill the holes,” Parkview coach Joel Steinman said. “We started the match with a bang, with Ben Neal winning in overtime. The kids came to wrestle, and they did a good job.’’


Random Lake defeated Horicon, 53-21, in the other semifinal match and advanced to the state tournament with a 48-24 win over Laconia.
