— The parent or guardian of a child who will be 5 between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1, 2009, may apply to have that child admitted to kindergarten at the opening of school for that year.

The Early Admission Process allows highly capable students to begin their education early. Applications may be made in writing to the Coordinator of Talented and Gifted Education at the district office by April 30. The application must state why the early admission is sought, including educational needs which may require an adjustment in student levels of learning.

During the week of June 15-19, a team including a school psychologist, speech and language teacher and a kindergarten teacher will screen each child's potential for success and ability to cope with the school environment. Children with superior intellectual abilities and above average social-emotional development, physical development and language development will be recommended for early entrance to kindergarten. The Board of Education will consider recommendations for early entrance at its second meeting in June.

A Janesville Talented and Gifted Association informational meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Educational Services Center, 527 S. Franklin St. This meeting will include a presentation by School Psychologist Craig Belknap on Early Entrance to Kindergarten and Kristen Moisson, Early Learning Coordinator. Call Ruth Robinson at (608) 743-5035 for more information.
