Parkview wrestlers pull a surprise
In a day filled with plenty of surprises, none were bigger than Orfordville Parkview’s regional title in Saturday’s WIAA regional wrestling competition.
Parkview, which finished in the lower half of the Rock Valley South Conference standings, won the Milwaukee Heritage Christian Division 3 regional title with 177 points. The Vikings had three individual champions in Ben Neal at 140 pounds, Jeremy Graham at 152 and Ben Soyck at 189. Parkview will wrestle host Laconia on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in a team sectional semifinal match.
Clinton, another Rock Valley South school, won the Division 2 Brodhead/Juda Regional. The Cougars finished with 236 points, while Whitewater was second with 214. Daniel Banh (112), Brandon Wixom (119), Bryan Banh (125) and Brad Hesebeck (130) won individual titles for Clinton, which will wrestle state-ranked River Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday night in a semifinal match of the Lodi Team Sectional. Lodi is the top-ranked Division 2 team in the state and will wrestle Iowa-Grant in the other semifinal.
Whitewater got individual championships from Bryan Edwards (135), Nick Romani (189) and Andrew Mathison (215). Mathison was a state qualifier a year ago.
The host Cardinals had two champions in Dan Douglas and Devon Seitz, while Beloit Turner’s Ian Grice, Dylan Shallenberger and Tyler Haney won regional titles.
Evansville/Albany’s Eddie Schmoldt won the 171-pound title at Evansville in Division 2, and Elkhorn’s Ryan Slack and Richard Kessler won titles at the Oconomowoc Regional in Division 1. Kessler finished second in the state at 160 a year ago and is 34-0 this season at 171. Slack is also unbeaten (34-0) after winning the 119-pound title.
East Troy’s Jake Zess (125), David Edwards (140), Chesten Kesselhon (171)—all state qualifiers a year ago—won Division 2 regional titles at New Berlin West.
