The Middleton WIAA Division 1 sectional boys high school swimming meet was no picnic Saturday.

Big Eight Conference heavy hitters Madison Memorial, Verona, Middleton and Madison West finished first, second, third and fourth, respectively. Janesville Craig finished seventh and Janesville Parker finished ninth in the 12-team field.

Event winners qualify for the state meet along with the next 18 best times among the six Division 1 sectionals, not including sectional winners. Extra qualifiers will be announced today.

“It’s definitely the best sectional in the state,” Craig coach Brian Kitzman said. “It’s the best competition by far. We should be seeing a lot of these guys (at the state meet) next week.’’

Craig senior Nick Hazekamp finished fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.13) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (54.34), while Cougars’ sophomore Alex Loftus finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.33), and Parker senior Marcus Genrich finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.53) for the top individual event times among local swimmers.

Craig’s 200 medley relay team of Hazekamp, Alex Loftus, Sam Waddell and Matt Enloe finished sixth in 1:41.58 to set a school record.

The Cougars’ Nick Strub, Sean Davis, Tyler Meinders and Enloe posted a 1:31.66 in the 200 freestyle relay to break a 15-year-old school record of 1:31.69. Strub, Meinders, Enloe and Hazekamp combined to finish seventh in the 400 freestyle in 3:21.81.

“We expect our relay teams to be extra qualifiers for state, along with Hazekamp and Loftus” Kitzman said.

Parker’s Nick Olin, Jacob Johnson, Caleb Sigmund and Genrich finished eighth in the 400 freestyle in 3:28.95.

Racine Park Sectional

Lake Geneva Badger’s Alex Gaugert, Frank Kulik, Ellis Lagerhausen and Nathan Kidder won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.04 to qualify for a Division 1 state berth.

Kidder finished second in the 100 freestyle (47.67) and third in the 50 freestyle (21.99), while teammate Ellis Lagerhausen finished second in the 100 butterfly (54.95).

Cudahy Sectional

Delavan-Darien qualified in three individual events and a relay for this Friday’s Division 2 state tournament at the UW Natatorium.

Event winners qualify for the state meet along with the next 12 best times, not including sectional winners, in the Division 2 sectionals. Extra qualifiers will be announced today.

The Comets’ Alex Riegert had two state qualifying swims, winning the the 100 breaststroke in 59.94 and the 100 freestyle in 48.07.

Riegert’s teammate, Nathaniel Johnson won the 200 individual medley in 1:58.30 to make state. Johnson finished second to Riegert in the 100 breaststroke in 59.96.

Delavan-Darien’s Johnson, Tanner Schmaling, Kevin Schneider and Riegert won the 200 medley relay in 1:40.82 to earn a state berth.

Milton High School’s Jeff Maxwell qualifed for state in two events. Maxwell earned a chance to defend his Division 2 500 freestyle state championship, taking first in 4:43.83. Maxwell also won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.21.

Dalton Anderson of Elkhorn won the 100 butterfly in 52.37 for a state berth.

Whitefish Bay won the sectional title. Shorewood finished second, Milton third, Delavan-Darien fourth and Elkhorn finished sixth.

The Division 2 state meet will be held Friday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.
