Bluebirds overwhelm Eastside Lakers
JANESVILLE The Janesville Bluebirds had a little fun at the expense of the Madison Eastside Lakers here Thursday night.
Ross Mauermann scored five goals, and Grant Jahns added a hat trick as Janesville’s high school co-op hockey team pounded the Lakers, 17-1, in a Big Eight Conference game at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.
The Bluebirds (14-5, 10-3) played lethargic in beating the Eastside Lakers a week ago, but it was differen this time.
“We got right after them and never let up,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “We changed the lineup around a little bit, and I was really happy with the way everyone responded.
“Every line moved the puck around the ice the way you’re supposed to, and we finished when we were around the net.”
Ross Mauermann, the reigning Big Eight Player of the Year, got things going early with a goal eight seconds into the game. The Janesville Parker senior added three more goals in the period as the Bluebirds opened up a 10-0 lead.
Jahns, also a Parker senior, got two goals in the second period and completed the hat trick with a shorthanded goal at 15:40 of the third period.
Janesville finishes the regular season Saturday night at Sun Prairie.

Looking at the box score, I see that the only 2 points by anyone on the first line after the 1st period, was assists from Mauermann and Bayreuther on the same goal. The rest were from the 2nd and 3rd line players, both lines are looking great right now by the way. You don't tell your kids to lay down and stop playing, to make the other team feel better about themselves. You need to work on things and improve every game of the season, even if the game happens to be a blowout, because it's tough to simulate game speed in practice. And if kids are cleared to play, they are cleared to play, and the amount of time they get is up to the coach. That is why they hold the title of coach. GO BLUEBIRDS!!!!!

Have to agree with wisomom, with the lineup changing a little and a couple of loses heading into the playoffs, getting the flow of your lines to click is very important come playoff time. I wish the bluebirds the best of luck the rest of the way!

As a member of the hockey community, maybe hockey99 should have actually attended the game. Here's some facts, not that they seem to matter to some - first line of forwards and top two defensemen did not play at all the third period, the Lakers started a different goalie and his save percent couldn't have been over .500 and two other times this season the Lakers have been shut out while their opponents scored 12 or 13 goals - Verona and Kettle Moraine if you want to harass those players and coaches as well. Bottom line - the coaches did take action to prevent the game from being worse than it was. The Lakers are a younger, less experienced team and simply could not keep up. So unless you are telling your children to dumb down or not try as hard if they are working with someone not quite as smart or talented, please refrain from criticizing others who are simply doing their jobs - both the Bluebird players and the coaches. I'm sure both groups would have preferred a more challenging game in preparation for playoffs. Shame on you, hockey99, for showing some real pettiness.

The said player played 1 period last night, and was cleared to return to action by serving his code violation. Why he is still playing is none of our business.

Shame on the head coach. As a member of the hockey community, I ,along with many others, are embarrassed by this diplsay of unsportmanlike conduct--so very typical tho' of this program. winning at all costs--also-thumbs down to the coach for rewarding the bad off-ice conduct of one of his stars by playing him most of the varisty game and JV game this week--
