Warhawk women fight off Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE — UW-Whitewater struggled for awhile but made it past an upset-minded UW-Platteville, 69-56, in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball here Wednesday night.

The No. 11-ranked Warhawks improved to 10-3 in the WIAC and 19-3 overall as they get set to host fifth-ranked and league-leading UW-Stevens Point (20-2, 12-1) at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Platteville (7-14, 4-9) had a 45-40 lead over Whitewater with 14 minutes remaining, but the Warhawks responded with a 10-0 run for a 50-45 lead at 8:49.

Platteville pulled within 57-54, but Whitewater added a 9-0 run down the stretch for a 66-54 lead that the Pioneers couldn’t overcome.

The Pioneers held leads of 13-4 and 32-17 in the first half. However, Whitewater scored the final 14 points for 32-31 halftime edge.

The free-throw line and Tiffany Morton proved to be the Warhawks’ saving grace.

Whitewater made 21 of 24 free throws, and Morton scored 27 points, including an 11-for-12 effort from the foul line. Morton grabbed 17 rebounds to tie the school record for double-doubles with 27.
