Fluctuating temperatures open up the possibility of water main breaks.

Beloit Public Works Director Dave Botts says in January, the extreme cold caused problems with water mains. He says there have also been a few breaks with the warmer weather. He anticipates more water mains will break with the return of colder weather.

The breaks happen as the ground moves with the changing temperatures. Botts says there are some areas that are prone to breaks, but it's otherwise hard to anticipate where they will happen. It is easy, however, to see a water main break. Botts says if there's water in the roadway that doesn't have an apparent cause, then residents should call their water utility.
