Parker rules Big Eight again

— There's something about the Big Eight Conference tournament that brings out the best in Janesville Parker High School’s wrestling team.

The Vikings lost an uncharacteristic two conference dual meets during the regular season but were back on their familiar perch after Saturday’s conference meet at Beloit Memorial.

Thanks to Alex Craker’s pin to secure the 285-pound title in the last match of the day, Parker held off Sun Prairie for its fifth straight conference tournament title.

Parker also got individual titles from Adam Cavey at 103 and David Arndt at 160, and finished with 336.5 points. Sun Prairie, the dual champion, was 2.5 points behind Parker going into the last match but finished 8.5 points back as a result of Craker’s pin.

Beloit was third with 277.5, while Janesville Craig finished fourth with 245.5. Siven Furseth won his second straight conference title for the Cougars, as the sophomore cruised to 112-pound honors.

Craker, a senior, avenged a dual-meet loss to Sun Prairie’s Trevor Houser in helping lead his team to the title.

“It was nice to come back and get him, especially with what it meant for the team,” Craker said of pinning Houser. “I was confident coming into the match that if I could stay out of his bear hug, which he got me on the first time we wrestled, that I could beat him.”

Parker led by 21 points going into the finals, and appeared to be in good shape with seven wrestlers in championship bouts.

But after Cavey won by technical fall over Craig’s Kyle Upmann to win the 103-pound title, the Vikings lost the next four title bouts.

Sun Prairie got a title from Chase Steiner at 119 to narrow the gap, and also picked up additional points in the consolation matches.

Arndt earned Parker’s second individual title by pinning Beloit’s Brandon Dallman at 5:59, and that helped set up Craker’s heroics at 285.

Dallman was a defending conference champion, and had split two matches this season with Arndt.

“I knew I had to step up, and that the team needed me,” Arndt said. “He was a tough kid, but after I beat him in the Elkhorn Tournament, I was able to use that to my advantage today.”

Longtime Parker coach Ron Cramer has been through more close matches and close tournaments than he can remember, but Saturday was extra special.

The normally stoic Cramer was caught up in the emotions afterward.

“A great, great day for Parker wrestling,” Cramer said. “I’m not taking any of the credit, though.

“It all goes to my staff, and those kids on the mat who got the job done.

“But I’ll tell you what, this never gets old.”

Other finalists for Parker were Evan Cavey at 119, Brennan Casey-Schmidt at 125 and Travis Rucinski at 130.

The third-ranked Furseth improved to 35-1 on the season in winning the 112-pound class. Furseth pinned Parker’s Ryan Riley in 2:28 of the title match.

“Siven was Siven today,” Craig coach Jeff Kaster said. “Nothing fazes him.

“He just goes out and takes care of business.

“As a team, I was a little disappointed in how we did.

The semifinal round really hurt us. But now we need to forget about this and start concentrating on regionals.”
