— Milton High took advantage of a hole in Madison Edgewood’s lineup to score its first boys conference swimming title since 1991.

The Red Hawks won three events, including two victories by junior Jeff Maxwell, to nip Edgewood in the Badger South Conference meet here Saturday. Milton scored 445 points to Edgewood’s 434.

The Crusaders were hampered by the loss of Drew teDuits, who would have been a factor in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events.

“We found out (teDuits) wouldn’t be swimming when we got there,” Milton coach Tom Lieder said. “We lucked out.”

The Red Hawks lost to the Crusaders by four points during the conference dual meet season. They turned the tables on Saturday.

Maxwell and Edgewood’s Chase Stephens were the only double individual winners. Stephens won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races.

Maxwell picked up his first victory in the 200-yard individual medley, winning by a whopping 13 seconds with a time of 2:63. He also scored a victory in the 100-yard butterfly (54.32).

“Jeff normally doesn’t swim (the 200 IM),” Lieder said. “We normally have him in the 200 freestyle. We might have him swim the IM at sectionals next week.”

Erik Swanson produced Milton’s other individual victory, taking he 100 breaststroke in 1:05.20.

Edgewood won four events, including two relays, but Milton scored big in two relays, too. The Red Hawks’ A team finished second in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Milton’s B team scored sixth-place points in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

“We showed a little better depth,” Lieder said. “Our second relay teams were a big part of us winning the meet.”

So were the five seniors on the Milton roster.

“Our seniors really picked it up,” Lieder said of Ian McSweeny, Ryan Fisher, Adam Homan, Jimmy Anderson and Ethan Hanson.

“We’ve won dual meet titles, but no conference titles,” Lieder said of his team’s move from the Southern Lakes to the realigned Badger South. “We always ran into Lake Geneva Badger in the Southern Lakes.”
