Craig's Hazekamp second in backstroke at Big Eight meet

— Nick Hazekamp of Janesville Craig High School finished second in the 100 backstroke to lead local swimmers at the Big Eight Conference boys swimming meet here Saturday.

Hazekamp posted a time of 54.01 seconds, finishing just .9 seconds behind Middlton’s Sam Niesen, who won in 53.2.


Madison Memorial won the Big Eight title over Middleton, 497-471. Craig finished fifth with 204 points and Janesville Parker took seventh with 73 points.


Craig finished fifth in the 200 medley relay in a school-record 1:42.25 with Hazekamp, Alex Loftus, Sam Waddell and Matt Enloe. The school’s 200 medley relay record, which stood since 1979, was 1:42.26.


“It was a great meet for us,” Craig coach Brian Kitzman said. “It was Hazekamp’s best time of the season, and was .1 second off his career-best time he set at state last season.’’


Craig was also fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.62) with Nick Strub, Waddell, Tyler Meinders and Enloe. Loftus finished fifth in the 100 breastroke (1:03.93) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:08.84).


Michael Drives won the 200 freestyle (1:45.93) and the 500 freestyle (4:46.55) to pace the Spartans.
