Bluebirds regain winning form

MADISON — The Janesville Bluebirds got back on the winning track Thursday night.

Ross Mauermann’s hat trick lifted Janesville’s high school co-op hockey team to a 12-4 Big Eight Conference win over the Madison Eastside Lakers. The Bluebirds lost to Verona, 4-1, on Monday night.

Janesville (12-4, 9-2) trailed 4-3 in the second period, but outscored the Lakers 9-0 the rest of the way.

“We gave up a couple of soft goals early and really weren’t attacking like we should’ve been,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said.

“To their credit, the Lakers played hard and we needed to make the adjustments. Once we did that, we started moving the puck around a lot better.”

Mauermann, the Big Eight Player of the Year last season, scored all three of his goals in the second period.

Zach Bayreuther and Grant Jahns added two goals each for the Bluebirds, while David Jacobson stopped 15 shots to earn the win.

Janesville will play at Madison Memorial at the Madison Ice Arena at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
