— The shooting woes continue for Janesville Parker’s girls basketball team.

But when you play defense like the Vikings do, it doesn’t seem to matter.

Parker High held crosstown rival Janesville Craig to six field goals Tuesday night in a 56-26 drubbing in a Big Eight Conference clash in the Viking gym.

The Vikings (12-4, 11-3) moved within a game of first-place Middleton after the Cardinals were upset at home by Madison La Follette.

Parker made only 17 of 61 field-goal attempts against the Cougars, but Craig (6-10, 5-9) managed only two field goals the second half after trailing by 17 points at the break.

“Parker did a nice job of pressuring us, and instead of attacking, we started dribbling the ball east and west instead of north and south,” Craig coach Mark Marsden said. “You can’t do that if you expect to stay with a team as talented as Parker.

“You learn from this and go on. This is a tough place to play, and Parker is playing at a high very high level right now.”

Neither team was playing at a high level early in the game. The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0, but the Vikings responded with a 9-2 run to take a two-point lead with a 1:27 left in the opening period. The two teams were a combined 6-for-24 shooting in the first quarter, including a 3-for-15 performance by the Vikings.

“When you play against that junk defense, you’ve got to let the game come to you,” Parker coach Tom Klawitter said. “And we didn’t do that early on. We forced some things.

“The best thing about this night is that it’s over. We’re done with it, and we’re ahead, and that’s a good thing.”

Parker led 12-9 after one quarter before blowing the game open in the second. The Vikings began the quarter with a 13-4 run and led 31-14 at half. Craig made only one basket the entire second quarter—a three-pointer by Whitney Storbakken—and had seven turnovers.

Storbakken paced the Cougars with 15 points, but no other player scored more than two. Anne Morgan, Craig’s leading scorer coming into the game, was in foul trouble from the start and finished with only two points.

Two-time Big Eight Player of the Year Catie O’Leary led the Vikings with a game-high 17 points, but was only 5 for 17 from the field.

“We committed two players to O’Leary, but Parker’s underneath people did a nice job,’’ Marsden said. “Tom (Klawitter) did a good job of posting up a guard to attack our post players, and that put us in foul trouble.

“If we hope to have a chance in the tournament against a team like Parker, we have to have our starting five on the court. Not sitting on the bench in foul trouble.”

The Vikings led by 22 after three quarters, and both teams substituted freely in the fourth.

Danielle Flood added 10 points for Parker, while senior Adrienne McDonald had eight.

With La Follette on the schedule for Friday night at Madison, Klawitter is concerned with his team looking ahead to next Thursday’s home game against Middleton.

“La Follette is one of those teams that plays really, really well on its home court,” Klawitter said. “They’re the next thing on the agenda. That’s the most important thing for these girls to remember right now.”
