Beloit College splits games against Ripon

— It was a familiar routine Tuesday night for Beloit College’s men’s basketball team.

The Buccaneers (3-15, 1-10) fell behind early and couldn’t recover as they dropped an 88-68 decision to Ripon (7-9, 5-5) in a Midwest Conference game.

Ripon jumped to a 17-6 lead with 12:28 left in the first half and extended it 49-28 by halftime. The Red Hawks were up 77-47 with 9:16 remaining.

Andy Horton, an Orfordville Parkview High School graduate, led the Bucs with 26 points, and teammate Patrick Kenny had 20. Scott Gillespie, the son of Ripon coach Bob Gillespie, led the Red Hawks with 19.

Beloit College’s women’s basketball team held on in the closing seconds for a 42-40 victory over Ripon in a battle of Midwest Conference contenders here Tuesday night.

The win lifted Beloit (11-7, 8-3) into a second-place tie with Carroll (12-5) behind league-leading St. Norbert (14-4, 10-1). Ripon (10-7, 7-3) fell a half-game behind the second-place teams.

The Bucs led 20-18 halftime lead over Ripon, and neither team had more than a three-point lead in a tight, turnover-filled second half until the Beloit went up 38-34 with 2:59 remaining.

Beloit still led 42-38 with 11 seconds left on a steal and layup by Mary Parker. Ripon then made a basket and got a steal with four seconds remaining, but a shot at the buzzer was off the mark.

Parker led Beloit with 10 points, and Amanda Moore had eight
