— The Rock County Courthouse is one of 10 sites hosting the 26th Annual Wisconsin High School Mock Trial Tournament, sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin, on Saturday.

The courthouse, 51 S. Main St. in Janesville, will host Badger, Belleville, Beloit Turner, Monona Grove, Monroe, Mount Horeb, New Glarus, Oregon and Whitewater high schools.

The competitions are open to the public from 8 a.m. to about 5 p.m.

Eighty teams will compete statewide. The top 12 will advance to competition in Madison on March 15 and 16. The winner will represent Wisconsin at the National Mock Trial Championship.

Mock trials follow the rules and structure of a court trial. Teams of six to 12 students argue a case before a panel of judges, comprising volunteer attorneys and jurists.

This year’s competition involves a hypothetical environmental contamination case.

I will have to go watch this. I was on a mock trial team back for Milton back in 88 and it was fun and we learned a lot from it. Good luck to all of the teams. I know how much work you put into preparing for it.
