Fire damages Janesville apartment

The Janesville Fire Department is investigating a fire at 622 East Milwaukee Street late Tuesday morning.

Firefighters repsponded quickly because the fire was only a couple blocks away from the station. Fire was contained to the lower apartment in the three-unit, two story structure. As firefighters entered through the front door, they were met by an upstairs resident escaping with two dogs. Firefighters rescued another dog and cat, but report another dog perished.

Smoke detectors were operating, and sounding when firefighters arrived.
