Delavan-Darien High School’s boys basketball team continues to work overtime, but the Comets can’t get over the hump.
After dropping a four-overtime decision to Westosha Central two weeks ago, Delavan-Darien was a 70-68 victim of Union Grove in double overtime Monday night.
Evan Hapner hit a jump shot from the free-throw line with six seconds left for the only two points of the second overtime to give the Broncos (5-7, 3-4) a Southern Lakes Conference victory at Delavan.
Union Grove came from behind with an 18-13 advantage in the fourth quarter to grab a 53-51 lead. Tyler Butke then scooped up a loose ball and scored for Delavan-Darien with 20 seconds left in regulation to force a 53-53 tie and the first overtime.
Nathan Radke, Union Grove’s high scorer with 19 points, missed the last shot of the first overtime, which ended in a 58-58 tie.
Butke took scoring honors with 23 points. Aaron Logterman had 13 for the Comets (6-7, 2-4), and Jarrett Fowlkes added 10. Hapner finished with 12 to back up Radke.
