Parker has no problem with Onalaska
LA CROSSE At first, the Janesville Parker girls basketball team was simply taking advantage of opportunities.
Before long, it was creating those opportunities and running away from another opponent.
The Vikings completely overwhelmed Onalaska 61-20 in their second game at the La Crosse Logan Holiday Tournament.
Parker (6-1) dominated every aspect of the game and started to bury the flustered Hilltoppers when it turned up the defensive pressure after the first quarter.
"You hope the kids learn on the court as they go," Parker coach Tom Klawitter said. "As the game went on, I think they started to really exploit the weaknesses they started to find.
"That's what you want to see."
Few of Onalaska's early turnovers were forced. The Hilltoppers (1-7) simply threw passes away or made other mistakes.
But that started to change when Viking defenders started to assert themselves over the final three quarters.
Five Parker players had at least one steal in the second quarter, and Danielle Flood had two.
When the junior converted the second one into a three-point play, it gave the Vikings a 28-7 lead with 2:50 left in the second quarter.
Onalaska shot 0-for-10 in the second quarter, and Parker's defensive blitz put the Hilltoppers in a 31-9 hole by halftime.
"We had to watch the flex cuts and make sure to switch and give help, and we didn't do a very good job early in the game," Parker senior Kaynesha Zinn said. "It was a little different thing for us to do, but I think we did pretty good with it later."
Zinn had 10 points and nine rebounds. Her five offensive boards led a team that finished with 23 of them. Savannah Shepler added 10 points with a pair of three-pointers.
Kathryn Pernot finished with eight points and four steals, and Flood scored eight points to go with four assists.
