Wixom, Banh win titles

— The Mid-States Tournament turned out to be a coming out party for Clinton’s Daniel Banh and Brandon Wixom.

Banh remained unbeaten on the season at 21-0 by winning the 112-pound title at the prestiguous two-day tournament on the campus of UW-Whitewater.

Wixom improved to 18-2 after capturing the 125-pound title.

Kenosha Tremper won the 39-team tournament with 195 points. Delavan-Darien was seventh with 115, Elkhorn ninth with 96.5 and Janesville Parker 10th with 93.

Parker junior Brennan Casey-Schmidt lost in the 119-pound title bout to Tremper’s Dominic Garcia.

Beloit Memorial’s Alex Polizzi, a Northwestern University recruit, won the title at 215.

Elkhorn’s Taylor French lost the 130-pound title bout, while Delavan-Darien’s John Benzon was denied a title at 145 after losing the championship bout.

Beloit Turner’s Dylan Shallenberger lost the 171-pound title match.
