JANESVILLE Ten, nine, eight, seven … round up the kids.
Six, five, four … head for the Janesville Athletic Club.
Three, two, one … Happy New Year!
From 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, the Janesville Athletic Club is hosting the “Sunset Tan Fun at the Club” New Year’s Eve Bash.
That’s a long name for what organizers hope will be an annual event for families—and a way to support two local charities: The Boys & Girls Club of Janesville and Love In the Name of Christ of Rock County (Love INC).
Here’s the best part: Admission is free.
“We wanted to give kids and their families something to do on New Year’s Eve,” said Mark Groshan, owner of the athletic club.
And there will be plenty to do.
Free carnival games will be set up on the tennis courts. Basketball games and contests will take place in another part of the gym, and space will be set aside for jump machines, too.
Or kids can go for a dip in the pool.
Also, the band @ Image will play in the large fitness room.
Organizers have managed to create a free event that’s also a benefit by asking local businesses and community members to contribute to the cause.
“We are getting as much as we can donated,” Groshan said. “We’re getting sponsorships from local businesses and also local groups and people who think an alcohol-free, family-friendly event is a good idea.”
It’s also the first time in a long time that Janesville has offered a kid-specific New Year’s Eve party. It’s appropriate then that part of the money raised will go to the Boys & Girls Club of Janesville, an organization that works to provide positive role models and constructive activities for kids.
Love INC works as a “gap” ministry with churches to meet a variety of needs that might not be covered by traditional social service or charitable agencies. Its work reaches families and individuals.
Groshan and organizer Raejene Schlenke are still looking for volunteers to take two-hour shifts at the event.
Anyone interested in helping should call Schlenke at (608) 531-1880.
