Sonntag propels Warhawks in Vegas

— Senior guard Heidi Sonntag took charge Saturday night in giving UW-Whitewater’s women’s basketball team a victorious finish in the Las Vegas Hoopla.

Sonntag scored Whitewater’s last 11 points of the first half and set the pace overall with a 23-point game as the Warhawks rolled to a 73-51 triumph over Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas.


Whitewater, No. 11 and 12 in the NCAA Division III ratings, broke even its two Hoopla games and improved to 8-2 for the season. Southwestern fell to 3-5.


The Warhawks used two


7-0 runs to build a 36-28 halftime lead. After leading 42-34 with just less than 16 minutes remaining, they broke away for a good with an 8-0 run.


Whitewater made a season-best 17 of 18 free throws. The Warhawks also had a 35-20 advantage on the boards, led by Chantel Burg’s eight rebounds, and they collected 14 steals. Berg had four of those steals and six assists.


Senior point guard Kelsey Hendrickson backed up Sonntag with 18 points for Whitewater, and freshman center Courtney Kumerow had 11.


The Warhawks are idle until a Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Edgewood in Madison.
