WCLO's Steve Benton reports the Beloit Police and Fire Commission names Norm Jacobs the next chief

RSS

— Beloit's new police chief likes the direction the department is going, but is also ready to make few changes.

Norm Jacobs was named chief by the Police and Fire Commission last Thursday, but he's actually been in charge since Sam Lathrop retired earlier this year. He was one of three finalists for the position, and the only candidate from Beloit.

Jacobs says he wants to be more proactive in fighting crime. He believes much of that can be accomplished by officers gaining a better rapport with the public.

Jacobs was hired a rookie officer in 1978. His new rank will be official when he's sworn in as chief during a city council meeting in January.
