Turner's free throws hold off Clinton; Memorial tops King

When the game was on the line, Beloit Turner High School’s boys basketball team responded in a big way Saturday at Clinton.

The Trojans made 15 of 22 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Cougars, 66-59, for a key Rock Valley victory.

Turner (4-1) improved to 3-1 in the conference and moved within a half-game of first-place Walworth Big Foot (3-0) in the South Division. After knocking off defending North Division champion East Troy on Thursday, the Cougars fell to 2-2 in the conference and 3-4 overall.

The Trojans took a 45-41 lead into the final period. D.J. Hill then made all eight of his fourth-quarter free throws, and teammate Aaron Jones made six of eight to keep Turner on top.

Hill and Jones led the way with 15 and 14 points, respectively, as Turner withstood Clinton’s 6-1 advantage in three-point goals. Jordan Conway also had 12 points for the Trojans, and A.J. Bernstein added 11.

Charles Stevenson paced Clinton with 15 points, followed by Ross Oldenburg with 11 and Cody Risseeuw with 10.

Badger South

Madison Edgewood (4-2) stayed atop the Badger South at 3-0 with 55-42 victory Satutrday night over visiting Monona Grove (3-3, 2-2).

The Crusders broke away from a 26-21 haltime edge with a 18-5 command of the thiord quarter.

Spence Brink led Edgewood with 13 points, and Zach Zweifel matched that total for Monona Grove.

Nonconference

Vander Blue and Tre Creamer led the way Saturday night as Madison Memorial pulled away from Milwaukee King for a 56-43 victory in the Converse/Eastbay Classic at the Al McGuire Center.

Memorial’s defending WIAA Division 1 state champions (4-1) put the game out of reach in an 18-8 fourth quarter.
