Verona dominates Parker from the start
JANESVILLE Janesville Parker’s boys basketball team got a lesson in Basketball 101 here Friday night.
The Verona Wildcats taught Parker the basics of how to run a backdoor cut.
And how to pick-and-roll to the basket. And most importantly, how to play the game the way James Naismith intended it to be played.
Parker could do little right in an 81-43 Big Eight Conference loss.
The Vikings (1-4, 0-4) committed 28 turnovers, and they could only watch as the Wildcat starters sliced and diced their way to the basket time and time again for layups.
After playing fairly well against unbeaten Madison East on Wednesday night, the Vikings took a step back against Verona.
“This is probably as disappointed as I’ve been in my two years here,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “They beat us in all phases. They just took it to us, and I’m extremely disappointed.
“We’re better than what we showed tonight, and that came against a team that does the same types of things that we want to do.”
Things started out badly for Parker and got worse. The Vikings turned the ball over on their first four possessions and eventually trailed 10-2 with 3:56 left in the quarter after Sam Karls scored off a perfectly executed backdoor screen-and-roll.
The Vikings turned the ball over 17 times in the first half, allowing the Wildcats (4-2, 3-1) to forge a comfortable 38-20 halftime lead. Verona went on a 12-0 run early in the second quarter to push the lead to
33-8.
“We looked like deer in the headlights to start the game,” Masterson said. “And I really didn’t see that coming because we talked all week about what Verona likes to do and what to expect.
“I don’t know. Maybe we’ve got to go back and start at square one. We just didn’t play well on either end of the court. And that’s really frustrating.”
Karls led Verona with 18 points, while Matt Ropel added a season-high 15.
Tyler Teubert scored 14 points to lead the Vikings.
Parker plays at Milton Tuesday in a nonconference game.
