— Training for the UW Extension General Master Gardener Volunteer Program will be on upcoming Thursdays at the Government Center, 100 W. Walworth St.

Training will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28; Feb. 4, 11 and 25; March 11 and 25; April 8, 15 and 22; May 6, 13 and 20.

Beginners and experienced gardeners are welcome. Learn about plant growth, ecosystems and diseases; insects; turf and much more. The Master Gardener program trains adults who, in turn, voluntarily use their knowledge on projects to benefit their community.

Participants must be 18 or older, complete a background check and sign a volunteer agreement form prior to classes. To become certified as Master Gardeners, they must attend 12 general training classes, pass an open-book take-home exam and finish 24 hours of volunteer service before October 2010.

The class fee is $200, which includes a copy of the Wisconsin Master Gardener Program Manual, the 12-week training course and one-year memberships to the Walworth County Master Gardener Association and the Wisconsin Master Gardener Association.

Call Christine Regester, UW Extension horticulture educator, at (262) 741-4951 or visit uwex.edu/ces/cty/walworth/hort/index.html to register.
