Clinton trips East Troy

Clinton High topped off a big night for the South in Rock Valley boys basketball.

The host Cougars offset the absence of leading scorer Ross Oldenburg by combining a balanced attack with a superb night on free throws to stun defending North champion and preseason favorite East Troy, 77-74.

In handing the visiting Trojans only their second conference loss in two seasons as a Rock Valley member, Clinton improved to 2-1 in the South and 3-3 overall. East Troy fell to 2-1 in the North and 3-2 overall.

Clinton gained the upper hand with a 23-13 advantage in the second quarter for a 39-33 halftime lead. The Cougars carried a 52-50 edge into the fourth quarter, then made 14 of 16 free throws in the last eight minutes to maintain their lead.

Zach Wisowaty went 4-for-4 at the line for Clinton in the final period, while Cody Risseeuw and Andrew Moen each were 5-for-6.

While the 6-3 Oldenburg sat out with an illness, Moen led Cinton with 20 points. Risseeuw scored 13, and teammates Chandler Stevenson and Justin Langley had 10 apiece.

Brandon Schmidt had a game-high 27 points for East Troy. Scott Beckwith scored 14 for the Trojans, while Brett Bouwman and Tanner Plomb asdded 10 apiece.

-- Brodhead 50, McFarland 47—Carson Scheidegger made four free throws and Jake Cole hit two all in the final 55 seconds as the Cardinals (3-2, 2-1) hung on to beat the Spartans (1-4, 0-3) in a Rock Valley crossover game.

Brodhead had missed 19 of its first 36 free throws before hitting its final six.

J.J. Panoske scored 20 points in the first three quarters to help give the Cardinals a 38-30 lead. Panoske, who has scored 84 points in the first three conference games, turned his ankle and sat out the final quarter.

Scheidegger and Cole each finished with nine points.

Tyler Wedel had 15 for McFarland.

-- Big Foot 47, Edgerton 28—The Chiefs (3-3, 3-0) remained in first place in the Rock Valley South by coasting past the Crimson Tide (1-4 1-2).

Alec McGreevy led Big Foot with 13 points, and Steve Dowden added 11.

Adam Gregory's 14 points paced Edgerton.

-- Turner 61, Jefferson 40—Jordan Conway scored 22 points, and Aaron Jones added 14 to lead the host Trojans to the Rock Valley win.

Turner (3-1, 2-1) led 14-3 after the first quarter and was never threatened after that.

Tyler Tomczak led the Eagles with 12 points.

-- Evansville 72, Palmyra-Eagle 50—Evansville (4-1, 3-0) jumped out to a 19-point halftime lead en route to a Rock Valley win that gave the Blue Devils the undisputed North Division lead.

Brian Lunde led Evansville with 21 points, while Dylan Erickson added 17.

Dan Meyer had 16 points to pace the Panthers (0-6, 0-3).

-- Parkview 51, Whitewater 48—Jay Naatz scored a game-high 16 points, including two free throws with 14 seconds left, as the host Vikings held off the Whippets for a South victory in a Rock Valley crossover game.

Parkview (4-3, 2-1) trailed by four after three quarters but outscored Whitewater 17-10 in the fourth.

Kyle Woodworth added 10 points for Parkview, while Mike Gabbey led Whitewater with 15.
