Beloit firefighters perform ice rescue
The Beloit Fire Department performs an ice rescue on the Rock River late Wednesday morning.
Authorities say a 21-year-old man apparently jumped the 35 feet from the Portland Avenue Bridge to the icy river in an apparent suicide attempt. Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Northrup says open water was nearby, and the greatest concern was the ice giving way under the firefighters.
The man is in serious condition and is expected to undergo a mental health evaluation.
