Whippets hold on to win

Whitewater High School held off Williams Bay for a 46-43 nonconference boys basketball victory Monday at Whitewater.

The Whippets (2-2) jumped to a 17-6 first-quarter lead, but the Bulldogs chipped away to trail 42-40 with less than a minute remaining. Tony Bilderback stepped to the line and made four free throws down the stretch to ensure the Whitewater victory.

Bilderback finished with a game-high 22 points, and teammate Mike Gabbey added 11. Larry Crement scored 17 points, and Jack Slovick added 14 for the Bulldogs.

-- South Beloit 65, Clinton 57—The SoBos exploded for 31 points in the second quarter to take a 40-28 halftime lead.

The Cougars fought back to cut the deficit to three points with two minutes remaining, but could not turn the corner in the nonconference defeat.

Ross Oldenburg scored 14 points for Clinton, while Cody Risseeuw scored 11 points and Justin Langley added 10 for the Cougars. Denzel Woods scored 21 points, including 13 in the second quarter for South Beloit.

-- Belleville 70, Palmyra-Eagle 38—The Wildcats held a 20-4 first-quarter lead en route to pounding the Panthers.

Nick Davis scored a game-high 18 points to lead four Wildcats in double figures. Kevin McGivern scored 16 points and teammate Dan Meyer added 10 for Palmyra-Eagle.
