West edges Parker boys
MADISON Madison West’s Antonio Golden hit four free throws in the waning seconds to lift the Regents to a 58-55 Big Eight Conference boys basketball victory over Janesville Parker here Friday.
The loss dropped Parker to 0-3 in conference play and 1-3 overall, while West improved to 1-1 and 1-2.
With 8.6 seconds left, and the score tied at 54-54, Golden sank two free throws. On the Vikings’ next possession, Parker’s Tyler Teubert was fouled. With 6.7 seconds left, Teubert made his first free throw, but he missed the second.
The Vikings were forced to foul, and with just a second left, Golden made both free throws for West’s three-point winning margin.
Parker coach Ryan Masterson said he was surprised the Vikings were able to have a chance to win after committing 34 turnovers, including 21 in the second half.
“West played hard and came up with the big shots at the end, but we just couldn’t take care of the ball. We were lucky to be in the game.”
Most of Parker’s turnovers came from the West press, which the Regents employed the entire game.
In the fourth quarter, when Parker stayed with West after Creed Knutson tied the game at 54-54 on a three-point goal with 1:10 left, the Vikings continued to fall victim to the press. Parker had eight turnovers, all off the press, in the final quarter.
“We stressed at halftime that the keys to the game would be not turning the ball over and running our offense,” Masterson said. “We were very undisciplined tonight.”
It appeared at one point that Parker would overcome the turnovers at the foul line. The Vikings were 10 of 12 from the line in the first half and shot 6 of 9 in the second half.
But when Parker was forced to foul in the final minutes, West came up strong, making 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final quarter.
The press came as no surprise to the Vikings.
“We practiced it, and I’ve told the players we’ll see this for the rest of the year,” Masterson said. “If I was scouting for other teams, I’d bring the pressure, too.”
Masterson said the team will regroup and make some adjustment to handle the press.
“It’s frustrating because this was a game we could have won, but we’ll battle back,” he said.
